Organic Seed Production in the Southwest, September 10, 2010

Come and learn with local farmers and national seed experts how to grow organic vegetable seed for your own use or for commercial sale.  This September, Organic Seed Alliance (OSA) in conjunction with Family Farmer Seed Cooperative (FFSC) will be presenting a “how-to” workshop for farmers at the Hobbs Family Farm in Avondale, Colorado.

Workshop Focus:

  • Which vegetable seed crops are best suited for Colorado and other southwest states.
  • The basics of growing, harvesting and cleaning wet-and dry-seeded crops
  • How to maintain and improve crop genetics for organic growing conditions
  • Skills in harvesting, processing, and storing seeds

Workshop Instructors:

John Navazio, OSA Senior Scientist and Micaela Colley, OSA Director of Research, return to Colorado for their second year of partnering with growers and seed experts to provide practical skills in organic seed production.  Joining them will be Richard Bernard of Seeds of Change to discuss the organic seed market, and Bruce Carle, Cucurbit plant breeder, to cover growing methods and genetic selection of melon seed crops.
