Adverse weather during harvest of dry-seeded specialty seed crops, including vegetables, flowers and herbs, can be devastating for a seed grower. Rain, wind and cold may result in delayed harvests, increased incidence of plant and seed-born diseases, lower germination rates, reduced yields, or even complete crop losses. Organic Seed Alliance is working on a project funded by the Risk Management Agency to develop guidelines for mitigating weather-related loss in seed production. The states of Oregon, Washington and Idaho are well suited for production of dry-seeded seed crops due to a generally warm and dry harvest period of August through September. However, intermittent or severe rain during the normal harvest window can occur and is often unpredictable. These guidelines will help growers prepare for adverse weather, minimizing crop risks, and managing harvest and post-harvest handling to reduce crop losses and increase seed quality. Guidelines are being developed through consultation with experienced seed growers, university researchers, and seed industry professionals. Protocols and recommendations will also be presented at the Organic Seed Alliance 2006 Field Days - “Producing Organic Vegetable Seed.” Visit our field days page to learn more and register for our 2006 Field Days.
